Samatian is the word for the type of fig tree that flourishes on Samatian. It is used in traditional marriage ceremonies and adds a feeling of decadence to the beautiful 30-acre island.

• Accommodation at Samatian Island Lodge consists of four simple, airy, open-plan thatched chalets all with superb views of the lake.
• One chalet is ideal for families with a double and a twin bedroom - one upstairs and one downstairs, veranda, sitting room and bathroom.
• The other chalets have one bedroom and adjacent bathroom and sitting room. The open rooms provide a welcome breeze whilst mosquito nets provide protection during the night.

• Nature, Wildlife and Bird watching Experience: Excursions to Lake Bogoria to visit the bubbling hot springs and millions of flamingos can be arranged. AfricanMecca Guests usually leave after an early morning breakfast so arrive there before the heat of the day sets in and the animals and birds are most active. It is also possible to see Greater Kudu, Impala, Zebra, Grants gazelle and Wart hog to mention a few. The lake Baringo area boasts over 500 species of birds. Baringo is on the migratory route from Europe, so from October until May, Lake Baringo gets to see many migrants. A colony of Goliath Herons inhabits Samatian Island.
• Authentic Cultural Interaction: The Pokot people are one of the last remaining tribes little affected by Western influence. They may show you how they take the blood from the cows and prepare it for drinking. You will have the opportunity to look in their huts and learn how they live. The Njempsi people are living on the Eastern shores. They are cousins of the Maasai tribe and very different to the Pokot. Walks can be taken around the village to see how they make balsa wood boats for crossing the lake and for fishing. They will show you how they smoke the fish and how they construct the huts and keep their livestock. There is also a small nursery school there.
• Boat Safaris and Sundowners: Boat trips to view the birds, crocodiles and hippos and feeding the fish eagles are a must. Also one can visit the Baringo hot springs surrounded by desert rose plants. Evening drinks (Sundowners) on neighboring beaches to watch the sunset are a tradition at Samatian Island Lodge.
• Nature Walks: For the active hiking over Olkokwa island is fairly challenging and spectacular. Incredible views and plants are seen. Walks over Samatian Island are also fun. There are also beautiful walks along the lakeshores.
