Aberdare Country Club and The Ark
No visit to Kenya would be complete without going into the Aberdares, and when you do,it is a must to visit the Ark. A night at the Aberdare Club prior to your visit will be a memory never forgotten. The whole ambience of the place, the friendliness of the staff and the wonderful food make for a lifetime memory. The grounds are exquisite, and the little golf course will test even the best player. The Ark itself is just game watching at its best.It is wild, and you never know what to expect. We can remember the cat walk being closed because lions were nearby. We saw a herd of 100+ elephant right outside the window.Being awakened in the middle of the night to see elephant or leopard,or even the elusive bongo makes for a wonderful safari. We have been on several occasions, and were never disappointed. Go to the Ark,you will not be sorry.

The Ark
The most beautiful sound I've ever heard, I heard at the Ark. It was a frog or frogs calling in the evening from somewhere to the left, if you're facing the waterhole. I think it was either a Hyperolius Nasutus or a Kassina Senegalensis, or "Bubbling Kassina". It was a mesmerizing sound, and I sat on the viewing deck listening to it for a couple of hours. I can't forget that sound. I also got pleasantly scared by a huge hyena sniffing around the waterhole and eventually moving out of sight to just below where I was standing in the ground floor viewing area. He was snuffling, and he sounded so close, and I thought he was going to jump up and through the opening any second. I was alone in the room. After a minute, I couldn't stand it and bolted from the room, but how exciting! I never realized how large they were before that. Also, while I was there, I asked a naturalist (I forget his name) what kind of animal it was that I had just seen from my room. If I remember correctly, they looked like weasels, and I had seen two of them playing, then one chase the other into the trees. He got tremendously excited, said that they had just seen one of them a week or so before, and it was the first time they had spotted one that far east - they were from western Africa. He had no idea there were two of them until I told him. Unfortunately, my pictures, which I was going to send to him, didn't turn out - it was too dark for my camera setting. He was, however, going to call the Nairobi Museum and inform them that another one had been spotted. I forget the name of the animal. I loved the Ark, and indeed all of Kenya. I miss it, and long to go back. Hello and thank you to all Kenyans, especially those many of you who took me aside to show me a special view, or an animal that didn't like crowds. I hope your future brightens; I think of you often.

I went to the ark when I was a child, I am now 35 years old, and it is something I never forgot. There were boars banging against the walls, fighting, wildlife everywhere and you were in it. Something you never experience again

A highlight of our 10day safari was our two night stay at the Ark Never have I seen the animals that close. I have been on safari in various countries. I left my window open during the night, and we could hear the large cats roaring, life taken away, and rushing of various wildlife. passing the bushes beneath my window. I sat at the window and watched elephants come out of the bush. There were many hyenas, who came to hunt. Water buffalo mingled with elephants and secretary birds, and many varieties of antelope. Large and small, they drank in peace until the night. The guide and naturalist were exceptional. I recommend the Ark to everyone. I saw my first leapord there.

The Ark
Stayed one night at The Ark. It was a surreal experience; saw many elephants, water buffalo, birds. Rooms are very cabin-like with comfortable beds. All windows open wide including the one in the shower area. Coffee and hot tea available early in the morning until late at night. Constant viewing of wildlife through huge picture windows on 4 levels. Comfy coffee tables and couches everywhere. Excellent food in large restaurant with attentive staff. Roads are hellish and bumpy to get to The Ark but that is true of all Kenyan roads. If they were smooth, a million animals would be run over. Was probably one of my life's peak moments and never forgotten.

A most interesting hotel. It was cold and rainy my only night there with very few animals at the waterhole. A good experience despite that.

I visited the Ark in March, 1984 with Semester at Sea as a Freshman in college. I am now describing the incredible experience to my 9 year-old - hoping to one day take him to Africa in hopes that his experience is at least 1/10 as grand as mine was. It was a place and a time that I will never forget.

One of the mosy unforgettable experiences of my life. We observed all of the advertised animals throughout the night. We even had the fun of watching the Gamekeeper keep Tip O'Neil and his Congressional entourage from conducting a singsong during the evening. I hope to return.

My wife and I visted the Ark in June as part of a two week tour booked. This property was our only and biggest disapointment in all of Kenya. It was dirty, our room had numerous bugs both dead and alive-the food was less than average at best. I could go on but why bother! We both look forward to returning to Kenya but would never return to the Ark under any circumstances.

The Ark
I recently spent the night at The Ark and it was such a wonderful experience. When we arrived, the waterhole was full of a breeding herd of elephants and they stayed for hours. The ground level hide produced some wonderful photographs. During the night, a cape buffalo came grazing under my window and decided to rest for a few hours. This trip, I had brought 8 people with me and it was wonderful to see them run from their rooms at 3AM in their night close to see the black rhino that had come to the waterhole. Everyone should spend the night here.

I absolutely loved the Aberdares!! I had lunch at the club and then was driven to The Ark. I spent 2 wonderful days there. I know that I'll return there again someday. Africa will be my home. I am a school teacher, and I've passed my experiences on to my students. I have my pictures of The Ark and the animals that the kids love!!! Thank you for the time of my life!!!! Best Regards!! The Ark
Easily one of the most spectacular jungle accommodation available anywhere. We were there on May 22, 2004. The water hole and the salt lick was great, but the animal show was a bit disappointing. Could have more to do with the noisy group which descended on The Ark that day. We did see elephants, rhino, buffaloes, Hyenas and a host of antelopes though. Food was excellent and the the Skipper Simon was an amazingly positive guy, specially the way he kept his cool while the noisy group drove one up the wall
